LeBlonds in Tourny Parish Records, Eure, France, 1600s and 1700s
I’ve extracted some of the LeBlond entries from the parish records of Tourny, France, from the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries in an effort to identify the family of my immigrant ancestor, Robert LeBlond. Although the records do not yet prove that Robert came from Tourny or identify his parents, they reveal several related LeBlond families that can be followed through births, marriages, and deaths. By matching these records, we can begin to reconstruct some of the Tourny LeBlond family groups and narrow the possibilities for Robert’s origins.
Conclusions from the Records
When the birth, marriage, and death records are compared with one another, several of the Tourny LeBlonds can be matched with reasonable confidence. The records also reveal distinct family groups and show that several men with the same given names were living in Tourny at the same time. This is especially important in the case of the repeated names Louis, Robert, François, Nicolas, and Pierre.
Children Who Can Be Matched to Death Records
Several infant and childhood deaths can be identified with a high degree of confidence because the names and dates correspond closely with recorded births.
Gilles LeBlond, son of Louis LeBlond and Susanne Blier, was born on 10 April 1673 and appears to be the Gilles LeBlond who died only nine days later, on 19 April 1673.
Marie LeBlond, daughter of François LeBlond and Barbe Deuilly, was born on 4 November 1709 and is a strong candidate for the Marie LeBlond who died on 21 January 1711, at approximately fourteen months of age.
Jean Louis LeBlond, son of François LeBlond and Barbe Deuilly, was born on 16 February 1713 and was almost certainly the Jean Louis who died on 15 January 1714, shortly before his first birthday.
Catherine LeBlond, daughter of Nicolas LeBlond and Michelle Chaselois, was born on 25 November 1713 and appears to be the Catherine who died on 8 December 1713, less than two weeks later. Her brother Clément, born on 2 February 1716, likewise appears to be the Clément LeBlond who died on 17 March 1716.
The Family of Nicolas LeBlond and Michelle Chaselois
Nicolas LeBlond was born on 6 January 1687 to Louis LeBlond and Charlotte Lemaire. A Nicolas LeBlond married Michelle Chaselois on 22 February 1713. If these records refer to the same man, Nicolas would have been twenty-six years old at the time of his marriage, which fits well chronologically. Their children Catherine and Clément then appear in the birth and death records described above. This creates a coherent family group extending across two generations.
The François LeBlonds
François LeBlond, son of Louis LeBlond and Charlotte Lemaire, was born on 17 November 1681. He is a strong candidate for the François LeBlond who married Barbe Deuilly on 26 November 1707, when he would have been twenty-six years old. Their recorded children include Marie, Lucie, Jean Louis, and Marie Anne.
A François LeBlond also married Madeleine Gilles on 6 July 1716, and their children included Louis, Guillaume, Michel, Pierre, and Nicolas André Julien. It is possible that this was the same François remarrying after the death of Barbe Deuilly, but the records collected here do not establish that. Until a death record for Barbe or additional information from the marriage record is found, the two François marriages should be treated cautiously.
Michel LeBlond, born on 30 March 1722 to François LeBlond and Madeleine Gilles, is very likely the Michel LeBlond who married Marie Marguerite Petitpas on 1 August 1747. He would have been twenty-five years old at the time.
Several Men Named Louis LeBlond
The Louis LeBlond records are particularly important because they show that more than one man of that name was living in Tourny during the seventeenth century. A Louis LeBlond, son of Nicolas, was born on 6 April 1629. Another Louis, son of Pierre LeBlond and Anne Barbé, was born on 12 March 1644.
Three marriages involving a Louis LeBlond appear in the records: Louis LeBlond married Marie Le François on 3 July 1656, Susanne Blier on 12 July 1666, and Charlotte Lemaire on 21 February 1679.
The Louis born in 1629 would have been twenty-seven at the time of the 1656 marriage to Marie Le François, making him a very plausible candidate for that husband. The Louis born in 1644 would have been twenty-two when Louis LeBlond married Susanne Blier in 1666, making that identification equally plausible. These matches are not proven by the indexes alone, but the chronology fits particularly well.
The family of Louis LeBlond and Charlotte Lemaire creates an additional complication. Their son Pierre was born on 20 February 1676, even though the indexed marriage of Louis and Charlotte is dated 21 February 1679. Meanwhile, Louis LeBlond and Susanne Blier were still having children: Robert was born in 1677 and Noël in 1678.
This overlap strongly suggests that the Louis married to Susanne Blier and the Louis associated with Charlotte Lemaire were two different men. It also raises a question about the 1679 marriage entry for Louis and Charlotte, since their son Pierre appears in the birth index three years earlier. The original records may provide information that explains this discrepancy.
The Robert LeBlonds
Two Roberts appear among the Tourny births: Robert LeBlond, son of Louis and Susanne Blier, born on 15 November 1677, and Robert LeBlond, son of Louis and Charlotte Lemaire, born on 17 March 1684.
A Robert LeBlond died in Tourny on 4 October 1706. Either of these two Roberts could conceivably be that individual: the first would have been twenty-eight years old and the second twenty-two. The death index by itself does not identify his parents, so the record cannot yet be assigned confidently to either man.
This is significant to the search for my immigrant ancestor, Robert LeBlond. Neither Tourny Robert can presently be identified as the Robert who later lived in London, and the Robert who died in Tourny in 1706 may eliminate one of them once his identity is established. The original death entry should therefore be examined closely for an age, spouse, occupation, parentage, or other identifying information.
Other Possible Matches
Noëlle LeBlond, born on 25 December 1646 to Pierre LeBlond and Anne Barbé, may be the Noëlle LeBlond who died on 15 May 1718. She would have been seventy-one years old. Because Noëlle is less common than names such as Louis or Pierre, this is a plausible identification, although it remains unproven.
Pierre LeBlond, born on 20 February 1676 to Louis LeBlond and Charlotte Lemaire, cannot yet be confidently matched to either of the two Pierre LeBlond deaths recorded on 21 April 1690 and 23 February 1691. The repeated use of the name Pierre within the LeBlond families makes a name-only identification unreliable.
What This Means for the Search for Robert LeBlond
The Tourny records have not yet established that my Robert LeBlond came from this village, but they demonstrate that LeBlond was a well-established surname there and reveal several interconnected families living in Tourny throughout the period when Robert would have been born. They also show why matching individuals by name alone is dangerous: several Louis, François, Pierre, Nicolas, and Robert LeBlonds lived within overlapping generations.
The most promising next step is to examine the full original entries rather than relying solely on the alphabetical indexes. Ages, occupations, witnesses, godparents, spouses, and family relationships may distinguish individuals who share the same names. In particular, determining the identity of the Robert who died in Tourny in 1706 and clarifying the family of Louis LeBlond and Charlotte Lemaire could substantially narrow the search for the origins of the Robert LeBlond who later settled in England.

Index of Births
There are multiple indices in the front of the book with alphabetical listings in a multi year period. The index reads, “Table Alphabétique des naissances dans la Commune de Tourny depuis le 1er octobre 1626 jusqu’au 1er janvier 1651” with the subheading, “Noms et Prénoms des individus nés et de leurs Père et Mère Dates des actes.” In English, this reads, “Alphabetical table of births in the commune of Tourny, from 1 October 1626 through 1 January 1651. Names and given names of the persons born and of their father and mother. Dates of the records.”
I stopped collecting births after 1720 because my line of LeBlonds had moved to England by that time.
