West Fallowfield Township, Chester County, PA, Tax Lists
West Fallowfield Township was originally part of Fallowfield Township, which was divided to form several other townships, including Highland Township and East Fallowfield Township. The area was redefined in 1743, leading to the establishment of West Fallowfield Township as a separate entity.

1725 Sadberry and Fallowfield Tax List
In 1725, Sadsbury and Fallowfield Townships were assessed together as a single tax district. Consequently, this list includes residents of both townships and should not be interpreted as a list exclusively of Fallowfield residents. The surviving original county tax record is held by Chester County Archives and is included in the County Taxes, 1718–1753 series, also preserved on Pennsylvania State Archives microfilm roll 6437.
This list is found online at pagenweb.org and pa-roots.com. Scanned images of the original tax list can be found at Chesco.org. Below is the scanned image and then the list in alphabetical order.

1774 West Fallowfield Township Tax List
The 1774 West Fallowfield Township tax list records residents’ names, acreage, and taxable property, including horses, cattle, sheep, and servants. The original handwritten assessment also records taxes in Pennsylvania’s colonial currency of pounds (£), shillings (s), and pence (d). There were 20 shillings to a pound and 12 pence to a shilling. Tax amounts are shown in pounds/shillings/pence. For example, 0/7/0 represents seven shillings, while 1/2/6 represents one pound, two shillings, and sixpence. An amount written as £4 6s 0d means four pounds and six shillings, not £4.60 in decimal currency.
| Column | Meaning | Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| £ | Pounds | 1 pound = 20 shillings |
| s | Shillings | 1 shilling = 12 pence |
| d | Pence | 240 pence = 1 pound |
These figures are assessments of taxable property, not necessarily the amounts of tax actually paid. Please verify my transcription against the original before using this data and do leave a comment below if you identify any mistakes.
