Notes for Malcolm Fleming:

Death Notes: Killed at the battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547.

From Wikipedia: “The Battle of Pinkie Cleugh, along the banks of the River Esk near Musselburgh, Scotland on 10 September 1547, was part of the War of the Rough Wooing. It was the last battle to be fought between the Scottish and the English Royal armies and the first “modern” battle to be fought in the British Isles. It was a catastrophic defeat for the Scots caused by the use of Naval artillery by the English for the first time in a land battle in Britain. In Scotland it is known as Black Saturday. This was historically significant as the first “modern” battle fought in Britain, demonstrating active cooperation between the infantry, artillery and cavalry with a naval bombardment in support of the land forces.

Background to the war: In the last years of his reign King Henry VIII had tried to secure an alliance with Scotland, and the marriage of the infant Mary Queen of Scots with his young son, the future Edward VI. When persuasion and diplomacy failed, he launched a ruthless war against Scotland, an episode known as the Rough Wooing.

After Henry died, Edward Seymour, uncle to Edward VI, became Protector with the title of Duke of Somerset and with initially unchallenged power. He too wished to forcibly ally Scotland to England by marrying Mary to Edward, and also to impose an Anglican Reformation on the Scottish church establishment. Early in September 1547, he led a well-equipped army into Scotland, supported by a large fleet.”

JOHANNA STEWART is the daughter of King James IV of Scotland & Agnes Stewart. She was born Abt. 1505 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. She died on 20 Feb 1563 in France.

Notes for Johanna Stewart:

General Notes: Lady Janet Stewart (c.1505 – c.1563) was an illegitimate daughter of King James IV of Scotland. Her mother was probably Agnes Stewart, herself an illegitimate daughter of James Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan, but may have been Isobel Stewart, the earl’s legitimate daughter.

Lady Janet married Malcolm Fleming, 3rd Lord Fleming, who was killed at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547. She became a governess to the infant Queen Mary I of Scotland, and her own daughter, Mary Fleming, became a lady-in-waiting. They accompanied the young queen to France in 1548, and there Lady Janet became one of the mistresses of King Henry II of France and had an illegitimate son by him. After the child’s birth, she was sent back to Scotland.

Her son Henri de Valois (1551- June 1586) was legitimated and became governor of Provence.

He was twice married and to sisters, our subject being the son of his second wife. He died on his farm in September, 1863. He was one of the most enterprising and successful planters in west Tennessee, owning about 15,00 acres of good land and 100 negroes. He was for many years magistrate of his district, being an old line Whig in politics, and was conscientiously opposed to secession up the date of his death. His wives came to Tennessee at an early day and were second cousins of the noted John Bell. Dr. Marcus Jordan, our subject, resided on a farm in Gibson County, until fifteen years of age when he entered Union University at Murfreesboro, Tenn., graduating from the same in 1852. He then began studying medicine at McLemoresville under Drs. Boyd and Brannock, and later entered Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia, and graduated in March, 1857. He returned home and practiced at Milan until the war, when he was appointed first assistant surgeon of the Fifth Tennessee Confederate Infantry, and served in this capacity until the battle of Stone River when he was left behind in charge of the hospital, and was held in hostage by the Federals from June until December, 1863, and served in his professional capacity as surgeon of Col. Biffel’s regiment of cavalry, under Gen. Forrest until the close of the war. He resumed practice at Milan and has met with the bests of success. In November, 1858, he married Mattie H. Hillsman, who died in 1876, leaving four children: Robert Lee, Mary E., Marcus DeLafayette and Irma. In October, 1877, the Doctor married Josephine E. Perry, of Rutherford County. In 1874 he was elected to the State Senate, and served with honor and distinction during the session of 1875. Since 1869 he has been engaged in the drug business in Milan, and is a member of the Gibson County Medical Society. He and wife belong to the Baptist Church.” (From Goodspeed History of Gibson County, page 893.)
