\nAfter a painting by Webster. A charming scene. On the left, the children, in front of the village pump and by the side of the inn signboard, have set up an elaborate structure\u2014the like of which, whether it be for the comparative scarcity of shells, or the want of skill in our generation, we never see in these days. One youngster is handing to another the necessary candle to illumine the grotto. On the right, at the stall kept by an old woman in front of the greengrocer\u2019s, the village constable, in the tall hat and swallow-tail coat then worn by the force, is also celebrating in a practical way the first day of oysters; and in the centre of the picture are the benevolent old gentlemen and his lady whom the proprietors are especially requesting to \u2018Please remember the grotto.\u2019 A very favourite print. <\/p>\n
