My Cavanaugh \/ Murray \/ Fay lines intersect with the marriage of Mary Bridget Murray<\/a>, first to Patrick Cavanaugh and later to Patrick Fay<\/a>. I don’t know much about the Cavanaugh line yet but here are some records I have found that may be for my guy.<\/p>\n

Birth<\/h3>\n

Patrick’s age in the 1870 census is 26, making his birth year around 1844. He was born in Ireland.<\/p>\n

Arrival<\/h3>\n

Patrick must have emigrated to the U.S. before 1862 as his naturalization papers of 1867 indicate he had lived in the U.S. for at least 5 years. There are a bunch of Patrick Cavanaghs who fit my parameters and no way to tell which one is my guy. Here are two records that fit his birth year of around 1844:<\/p>\n

A Patrick Cavanagh, 7 years old, arrived on the ship Louis from Liverpool, England, on December 5, 1850, in New York, NY. He was accompanied by his younger brother, Michael, 7 months old, and Anne Cavanagh, presumably their mother, 30 years old. Another person is listed with them: William Bergin, 23. Other Cavanaghs are listed on this page. Are they all related? No way to tell right now.<\/p>\n

Possible Immigration Record 2<\/h4>\n

In this record, Patrick is a ten-year-old traveling with his mother, Kitty, 30, and his sister, Catherine, 6, all of Irish origin. They sailed from Liverpool, England, via the ship West Point, to New York, arriving on April 17, 1855. Patrick’s birth year would have been about 1845.<\/p>\n

Naturalization<\/h3>\n

I have found naturalization papers for a Patrick Cavanaugh who lived in Cleveland in 1867, possibly my guy.<\/p>\n

Marriage<\/h3>\n

I found an application for a marriage license for Patrick Cavanaugh and Bridget Murray, on August 1, 1868, below.<\/p>\n

This one is interesting in that the signing official, James O’Reilly, wrote ‘priest’ after his name.<\/p>\n

Children<\/h3>\n

Patrick Cavanagh and Bridget Murray had a child, Francis James Cavanagh, born on July 18, 1869, in Cleveland, Ohio. I found the birth record indexed at https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:VRM4-8JM<\/a>. Interesting note: Cavanagh in this record is spelled, “Cavannah.” Note to self: search for this variation of the name in future research. Also search for “Francis” instead of “Frank.”<\/p>\n

We know he must be living in Cleveland because he was married there this year but I do not find him in the 1868 city directory.<\/p>\n

1869<\/h4>\n

Patrick appeared in the 1869 Cleveland directory, working as a carpenter and living at 87 Walnut Street. There are three other Patrick Cavanaghs in that year’s directory! (No wonder genealogy research is so hard – how about using some middle names, people???!!!) Shoemaker Andrew Cavanagh lives next door at 89 Walnut; perhaps he is a relative? This is the first time I find Patrick the carpenter in Cleveland. There are some Patricks listed in earlier years who were laborers but I don’t know if they are the same as “my” guy.<\/p>\n

I find Patrick and Mary together with their son Frank in the 1870 Ohio census, seen below.<\/p>\n

Patrick is 26 and a house carpenter. Mary is 23 and is keeping house. Baby Frank is 11 months old, born the previous July. Both parents were born in Ireland and Frank was born in Ohio. The value of their real estate is $800.<\/p>\n

1871<\/h3>\n

In 1871 we find Patrick living at 242 Liberty Avenue and still listed as a carpenter.<\/p>\n

In 1872 we find Patrick living at 242 Liberty Avenue and still listed as a carpenter.<\/p>\n

In 1873, Patrick is still living at 242 Liberty Street and is still a carpenter.<\/p>\n

In 1874, Patrick appeared in the city directory as a carpenter working at C.C.C. & I.R’y shops and is still living at 242 Liberty Avenue.<\/p>\n

Death<\/h3>\n

Patrick died on Monday, September 7, 1874.<\/p>\n
