\nAustin O. Furst
\nHILTON HEAD ISLAND — Austin Owen Furst, 83, died Oct. 18. <\/p>\nHe was born in Bellefonte, Pa., and attended Bellefonte Academy and graduated from Gillman School in Baltimore. He received a B.A. degree from Princeton University and an L.L.B. degree from Dickinson School of Law, Carlisle, Pa. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and attained the rank of major. <\/p>\n
He returned to Bellefonte in 1945 and became the third generation of his family to practice law there. He retired from the practice of law in 1993. <\/p>\n
He was a member of the Centre County, Pennsylvania and American Bar associations and was on the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania Bar Association from 1973-1975. He was president of the Centre County Bar Association and on the Board of Directors of Keystone Legal Services. <\/p>\n
He was president of the Centre County Heart Association, a member of Brooks Doll Ebling Post of the American Legion, Bellefonte Kiwanis and the St. Simons Island (Ga.) Rotary Club. He was a member of Bellefonte’s First Presbyterian Church and the St. Simons Island Presbyterian Church. <\/p>\n
SURVIVORS: his wife, Margaret Watkins Furst of Hilton Head Island; two sons, Austin O. Furst Jr. of New Canaan, Conn., and Stephen W. Furst of Fairfax, Va.; and five grandchildren. <\/p>\n
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ashley Wing of the Cypress of Hilton Head, in the receiving room. <\/p>\n
Burial will be in Bellefonte Cemetery in Bellefonte. <\/p>\n

Austin “Monk” Furst died Oct. 18, 1998, on Hilton Head Island, S.C., following a long illness. He was born in Bellefonte, Pa., attended the Bellefonte Academy, and graduated from the Gilman School in Baltimore. At Princeton Monk was a member of the Army ROTC and the Cloister Inn Club. He majored in psychology.<\/p>\n
After graduating from Dickinson School of Law, he served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, attaining the rank of major. Thereafter, he returned to Bellefonte and became the third generation to practice law in that community. He retired in 1993, after having been a governor of the Pennsylvania Bar Assn. and president of the Centre County Bar Assn. Monk also had been a member of the Bellefonte Kiwanis and American Legion Post, the St. Simons Island [Ga.] Rotary, the First Presbyterian Church of Bellefonte, and the St. Simons Island Presbyterian Church.<\/p>\n
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Margaret Watkins; two sons, Austin Jr. and Stephen; and five grandchildren, to all of whom the class extends its deep sympathy.<\/p>\n
