He and his wife Frances are recorded as being born in Virginia. James is recorded as being born in Tennessee and the younger siblings in Mississippi. Children in the household are: James, 18, working as a laborer; William, 14; Emmarretta, 12; John, 10; Octavia, 7; Narcisus, 5.<\/p>\n

Other household members were Mary J Smith, 28, born in New York; and three children, Fred Smith, 5; Charley Smith, 3; Jno D Smith, 10, all born in Mississippi. James worked as an overseer. He did not own any real estate. His personal estate was valued at $2,000.<\/p>\n

Household members included \u201cE C Smith,\u201d age 34. This apparently was his sister, Emmaretta Cook Smith, living in the house to help out with the children, after the death of his wife in 1867. Children in the house are: F B Smith, 15; C M Smith, 12; J D Smith, 10; W J Smith, 8; and Frank Smith, 6.<\/p>\n
