Much like tax lists, they place individuals in a specific community at a specific time, but they often provide a more personal glimpse into everyday life. A directory may show where a person lived, what occupation he or she pursued, whether the person boarded with another household, and sometimes even the names of spouses or widows. Businesses, hotels, churches, and other local institutions are often listed as well, helping to reconstruct the texture of a town at a particular moment in time.

For local history and family research, city directories are especially valuable because they document change from year to year. They can show when a person first appears in a town, when he disappears, how his occupation changed, or whether he moved from one street to another. Read alongside tax lists, they help flesh out the story of a community: tax lists reveal property, acreage, livestock, and economic standing, while directories show residence, work, and neighborhood connections. Used together, they create a fuller picture of the people who lived in and shaped a place.

City Directories

Slatington, Lehigh, PA, City Directories

City directories are among the most useful sources for tracing people between census years.
