Straubs of Lehigh and Northampton County, PA
This page is dedicated mainly to my line of Straubs, but I will post info on other Straubs that I run across in my research.
MY LINE
My line of Straubs (variously spelled as Straup and Stroup) were of German origin, emigrating to America in the 1700's. As Moravians, they were members of one of the Protestant groups that was formed in the 1600's as a response to what they saw as the corruption of the Catholic Church. They probably lived in the southwestern area of Germany known as the Palatinate (today Bavaria). This region was subject to many problems: war, weather, religious quarrels, etc.. The promise of cheap land and a chance at a new life convinced many Palatines to emigrate. Many came to Pennsylvania, where they knew of William Penn, who had toured the Rhine Country shortly before receiving the royal charter for Pennsylvania in 1681. He offered to sell 100 acres of land for two English pounds.

Straub, David Walter
David Walter Straub was born in 1856 in Lehigh Gap, Pa. He attended
the Moravian Church. He lived at Millport. He scandalized society
when he eloped with Laura LaBarre. (See LaBarre Chapter.) The couple
had four children: Mabel LaBarre, C. Lee, Homer, and Violet.
The following passage, from David Walter Straub's obituary [1922?], describes the man:
Bethlehem, November 30, Dr. D. Walter Straub, one of this city's leading physicians, died in the Hahnemann hospital, Philadelphia, following an operationwhich was performed last Friday. Dr. Straub was 66 years of age and resided at 78 West Market Street. He was born at Lehigh Gap, the son of Levi and Leah Boyer Straub, and following his attendance at the Lehighton schools entered the Hahnemann medical college, from which institution he graduated in 1877. For the next two years he was attached to the staff of the Blockley Hospital, Philadelphia, going from there to Shenandoah where he remained until twenty four years ago when he located here. While a resident of Shanendoah he was president of the Triple County Medical Society. Dr. Straub was an active member of the Lehigh Valley Homeopathic Medical Society, holding the offices of president and secretary at various times. He was a member of the consulting board of the State Homeopathic Hospital at Rittersville and of the American Institute of Homeopathy. He was a member of the Bethlehem Club until two years ago. He held membership in the Central Moravian Church. He was married to Miss Laura LaBarre, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jesse LaBarre, of Slatington. Beside the widow there survive four children, Mabel, wife of Frank E. F. Farquhar, Lexington, Kentucky; C. Lee, Los Angeles, California, recently returned from Manila; Homer W., Philadelphia, and Violet L., wife of Gordon Richardson, at home; 10 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Louis Buck, of Ashley. His brother, Dr. Elmer Straub, a noted physician, died at Minersville, last May.
